What Vitamins Nutrients do what?

Acetyl-L-Carnitine

Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALCAR) a natural remedy super antioxidant, occurring form of L-Carnitine that specifically benefits the brain. ALCAR helps supply the brain with energy by improving energetics in the mitochondrion, the cell's energy generator. ALCAR promotes biosynthesis of acetylcholine, a key neurotransmitter for brain and nerve function. Acetyl-L-Carnitine has been shown in clinical studies to benefit cognitive ability, memory and mood.

Acetyl L Carnitine is a powerful anti-aging nutrient which is an amino acid the body uses to turn fat into energy. It is not normally considered an essential nutrient because the body can manufacture all it needs. However, supplemental Carnitine may improve the ability of certain tissues to produce energy. This effect has led to the use of Carnitine in various muscle diseases as well as heart conditions.

Acidophilus

Acidophilus is a fermented bacteria found in the mouth and small intestine. It aids in the digestive process.

Alpha Lipoic Acid

Other names: lipoic acid, R - Alpha Lipoic Acid, R-DHLA

Alpha lipoic acid is a fatty acid found naturally inside every cell in the body. It's needed by the body to produce the energy for our body's normal functions. Alpha lipoic acid converts glucose (blood sugar) into energy.

Alpha Lipoic Acid is also a powerfull antioxidant, a substance that neutralizes potentially harmful chemicals called free radicals. What makes alpha lipoic acid unique is that it functions in water and fat, unlike the more common antioxidants vitamins C and E, and it appears to be able to recycle antioxidants such as vitamin C and glutathione after they have been used up. Glutathione is an important antioxidant that helps the body eliminate potentially harmful substances. Alpha lipoic acid increases the formation of glutathione.

Alpha lipoic acid is made by the body and can be found in very small amounts in foods such as spinach, broccoli, peas, Brewer's yeast, brussel sprouts, rice bran, and organ meats. Alpha lipoic acid supplements are available in capsule form at health food stores, some drugstores, and online. For maximum absorption, the supplements should be taken on an empty stomach.

Calcium

Calcium and Magnesium have been linked to the prevention of osteoporosis.

Benefits of Calcium

An adequate daily intake of calcium is not only needed to form healthy bones and teeth, but also in preventing colon and rectal cancers, high blood pressure, and even preventing premenstrual syndrome. Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the human body. Of the two to three pounds of calcium contained in the average body, 99% is located in the bones and teeth. Calcium also plays an important role in weight loss, muscular contractions, vision, assisting with regulating heartbeat, transmitting nerve impulses, blood clotting, and helping to maintain the walls of blood vessels.

Calcium and Colon Cancer

Colon cancer claims 134,000 victims and causes about 55,000 deaths each year in the United States. Epidemiological evidence suggests that dietary levels of calcium and vitamin D intake are inversely related to the incidence of colon cancer

Animal health studies conducted in Japan concluded “Calcium exerted an inhibitory effect on the metastases of the cancer cells to the lungs by activating natural killer (NK) cells and macrophages, thus resulting in preventing the proliferation of cancer cells.”

Data from the Nurses' Health and Health Professionals Follow-up studies (88,000 women and 47,000 men, respectively) were analyzed to examine the effect of calcium intake on risk of colon cancer. At a 16 and 10-year follow-up for the two studies, 626 women and 399 men had developed colon malignancies. Those who consumed 700-800mg calcium daily, from diet or supplements, had a 40-50% lower risk of developing colon cancer than those with intakes under 500 mg/day.

Chromium Polynicotinate

Chromium Polynicotinate has greater biological activity than other forms of Chromium, including sources from picolinate. CP helps to stabilize blood sugar levels and can be critical to the synthesis of cholesterol, fats and proteins. Chromium polynicotinate consists of pure niacin-bound chromium, identified by United States Government researchers as the active component of true GTF (Glucose Tolerance Factor). GTF is responsible for binding insulin to cell membrane receptor sites. Chromium polynicotinate has been shown to possess greater biological activity than other chromium picolinate weight loss supplements.

Chromium Polynicotinate is a mineral required for regulation of blood sugar. It is involved in the metabolism of glucose and is essential for energy. The ability to maintain stable blood sugar levels is threatened by the lack of chromium in our soil and water and by a diet often high in white flour, refined sugar and junk food. Supplemental chromium has been used successfully to control cholesterol, promote the loss of fat and increase lean muscle tissue. Hoodia Slow carb formula uses a form of chromium that is readily absorbed into the blood. In fact, the niacin bound chromium is a much more effective form of supplemental chromium than the more common and cheaper chromium picolinate.

Chromium polynicotinate facilitates and/or stimulates the metabolism of sugar, fat and cholesterol in the body, as well as the function of insulin. Major hospital and university studies have suggested that supplementation with chromium may reduce body fat, help build lean body muscle, regulate blood sugar and lower elevated cholesterol, particularly in chromium deficient individuals. The polynicotinate and amino acid forms of chromium found in our Hoodia trim fast Slow Carb formulas are the most biologically active, most potent available.

Chromium plays a role in the metabolism of glucose, and is necessary for energy production. Since this mineral assists in the production of insulin, it helps to stabilize blood sugar levels and can be beneficial both for people with hypoglycemia and diabetes. It is also crucial to the synthesis of cholesterol, fats, and proteins. Chromium Polynicotinate is more effective than any other type of chromium, as it binds the elemental chromium to niacin (Vitamin B-3). This provides a biologically active form of chromium, which is more absorbable in the body.

Chromium Polynicotinate has been recommended by the U.S. Government National Research Council as the superior and preferred form of chromium for bioavailability and biological activity, thus the reason we use this form of Chromium supplement (as opposed to picolinate) in our Hoodia Slow Carb special weight loss formula.

Deficiencies in chromium are rare because this mineral is readily available in the foods we eat. However when deficiencies do occur it may be associated with glucose intolerance and/or insulin resistance.

Coenzyme Q10

Coenzyme Q10 (also known as Co Q10, CoQ10 Vitamin Supplement, ubiquinone, or ubidecarenone) is a compound that is made naturally in the body. A CO Q10 enzyme is a substance needed for the proper functioning of an enzyme, a protein that speeds up the rate at which chemical reactions take place in the body. The Q and the 10 in coenzyme Q10 refer to parts of the compound?s chemical structure.

Coenzyme Q10 is used by cells to produce energy needed for cell growth and maintenance. CO Q10 is also used by the body as an antioxidant. An antioxidant is a substance that protects cells from chemicals called free radicals. Free radicals are highly reactive chemicals that can damage important parts of cells, including deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). (DNA is a molecule inside cells that carries genetic information and passes it from one generation to the next.) This damage may play a role in the development of cancer.

CoQ10 is found in most body tissues. The highest amounts are found in the heart, liver, kidneys, and pancreas. The lowest amounts are found in the lungs. Tissue levels of coenzyme Q10 decrease as people get older.

Studies have yielded information about how CoQ10 works in the body to produce energy and act as an antioxidant. Some studies have suggested that coenzyme Q10 stimulates the immune system and increases resistance to disease. In part because of this, researchers have theorized that Co Q10 may be useful as an adjuvant therapy for cancer. (Adjuvant therapy is treatment given following the primary treatment to enhance the effectiveness of the primary treatment.)

DHEA

DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is asteroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands which has been linked directly to the aging process. The amount of DHEA stadily decreases in the body as we age.

Gerovital - KH3

GH3 also known as Gerovital H3 or KH3 has been used widely in Europe by millions of people after being discovered in the mid 1950's.

Procaine hcl (procaine hydrochloride) is the active ingredient in Vitacel GH3 through Vitacel 9 dietary supplements. Procaine HCl is broken down rapidly by enzymes in the blood stream into PABA and DEAE. The PABA and DEAE are rapidly conjugated and removed from the blood and excreted from the body. Because of this procaine HCl and its breakdown products (metabolites) are unable to get into the cells in any great quantity to produce benefits. Procaine HCl will produce some benefits by itself, but they are very limited. However when procaine HCl, is complexed properly (Doctor Koch patented procaine complexing process) the procaine HCl is protected from the action of the enzymes in the blood and tissues this protection gives the procaine enough time to be transferred into the cells of the body where it helps the cells rebuild, repair, and detoxify. This healing action of the procaine HCl complex is responsible for the rejuvinating health improvements in conditions and diseases.

Lycopene - Overview

Today, science has a better understanding of Lycopene and why fruits and vegetables should be part of a healthy eating plan. You probably enjoy them for their wonderful flavors and bright colors. But, fruits and vegetables are good for you too. An eating pattern packed with plenty of fruits and vegetables includes two to three servings of fruits and three to five servings of vegetables each day.

Fruits and vegetables provide important nutrients including antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene and lycopene. Antioxidants have disease-fighting properties that protect cells from damage by substances called free radicals. Antioxidants work by neutralizing free radicals that are formed when body cells burn oxygen for energy. Antioxidants also may help keep the immune system healthy and reduce the risk for cancer and other diseases.

What is lycopene?

There has been much scientific studies and research done on the heath bennefits of Lycopene. Lycopene is a pigment that gives vegetables and fruits, such as tomatoes, pink grapefruit and watermelon, their red color. It also appears to have strong antioxidant capabilities. Several studies and research suggest that consumption of foods rich in lycopene is associated with a lower risk of prostate cancer and cardiovascular disease.

In a 1995 Harvard University study conducted with 47,894 men, researchers found that eating 10 or more servings a week of tomato products was associated with a reduced risk of prostate cancer by as much as 34 percent.

The protective effect of antioxidants on heart disease has been well documented. In a recently published study, men who had the highest amount of lycopene in their body fat were half as likely to suffer a heart attack as those with the least amount of lycopene in their body fat. Researchers have determined that the level of lycopene in body fat is an indicator of lycopene content in the diet.

Melatonin

Melatonin, the pineal hormone is best know for its role in the rgullation of sleep. Melatonin has also been linked to the delay of the effects of aging.

Olive Oil

Has been shown that it may be effective in helping prevent against arthritis, cancer and heart disease.

Omega Fatty acids

Omega fatty acids...also known as good fats...can be found in all kinds of fish and oils such as flaxseed, linseed, Evening primrose. Numerous Omega 3 fatty acid studies have linked it to health benefits related to rheumatoid arthritis.

Paba

Paba Aminobenzoic Acid is a member of the B Vitamin group and is part of the folic acid molecule. Dietary sources include eggs, liver, wheat germ, whole grains. rice, and brewers yeast.

Paba is most know for its protective effect on the skin.

Phosphatidylserine

Hoodia as a diet suppressant Health headlines have preached about the necessity of calcium for bones, folic acid for the heart, and lutein for the eyes. Likewise, a number of nutrients such as ginkgo, SAMe and choline have been deemed helpful for the brain. One that's absolutely vital, though, is Phosphatidylserine (PS). What makes experts so sure that we need phosphatidylserine is that the brain actually produces it. Aging slows the production of phosphatidylserine to sub-optimal levels that preclude us from functioning at full mental capacity. This is where supplementation with phosphatidylserine comes into play. A growing body of scientific findings supports the vital role of phosphatidylserine in improving and reversing the damage that age and/or disease have set in motion.

Phosphatidylserine (PS) is a phospholipid that is found in all cells, but is most highly concentrated in the walls (membranes) of brain cells, making up about 70% of its nerve tissue mass. There it aids in the storage, release and activity of many vital neurotransmitters and their receptors. Phosphatidylserine also aids in cell-to-cell communication.

Phosphatidylserine is involved in the upkeep and restoration of nerve cell membranes. Among its list of functions, phosphatidylserine stimulates the release of dopamine (a mood regulator that also control physical sensations, and movement), increases the production of acetylcholine (necessary for learning and memory), enhances brain glucose metabolism (the fuel used for brain activity), reduces cortisol levels (a stress hormone), and boosts the activity of nerve growth factor (NGF), which oversees the health of cholinergic neurons.

Research has shown that dietary supplemntation with Phosphatidylserine can slow and even reverse the decline of learning, mood, memory, concentration, word recall related to dementia or age-related cognitive impairment in middle-aged and elderly subjects.

What is Resveratrol?

Resveratrol - also known as trans-resveratrol, is a phytoalexin produced and sourced naturally by several plants when under attack by pathogens such as bacteria or fungi. Resveratrol has also been produced by chemical synthesis and is sold as a nutritional supplement derived primarily from Japanese knotweed. In mouse and rat experiments, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, blood-sugar-lowering and other beneficial cardiovascular effects of resveratrol have been reported. Most of these results have yet to be replicated in humans. In the only positive human trial, extremely high doses (3–5 g) of rezveratrol in a proprietary formulation have been necessary to significantly lower blood sugar. Resveratrol is found in the skin of red grapes and is a constituent of red wine. Experiments and resveratrol studies have shown that resveratrol treatment extended the life of fruit flies, nematode worms and short living fish but it did not increase the life span of mice.

Heart/Blood Vessels, Antioxidant Vitamins and Resveratrol Benefits

When researchers deconstruct heart disease health studies, they see many different things happening at the level of the cell. Cholesterol and other fat-related substances are one small part of a bigger picture that involves many other factors. Fortunately, many facets of heart disease can be controlled through dietary means. Resveratrol is a dietary agent that has powerful and diverse effects on the heart and blood vessels.

IMPORTANCE OF MINERALS

Life-sustaining minerals are necessary for 95% of the body's daily functions.
As important as vitamins are, they can do nothing for you without minerals.

Vitamins cannot be assimilated without the aid of minerals. And though the body can manufacture a few vitamins, it cannot manufacture a single mineral. Minerals act as catalysts for many biological reactions within the body, including muscle response, the transmission of messages through the nervous system, the production of hormones, digestion, and the utilization of nutrients in foods. All tissues and internal fluids of our body contain varying quantities of minerals. Minerals are constituents of the bones, teeth, soft tissue, muscle, blood, and nerve cells. They are vital to overall mental and physical well-being.

Micronutrients

DNA damage from micronutrient deficiencies is likely to be a major cause of cancer.

A deficiency of any of the micronutrients: folic acid, vitamin B12, vitamin B6, niacin, vitamin C, vitamin E, iron or zinc, mimics radiation in damaging DNA by causing single- and double-strand breaks, oxidative lesions or both. For example, the percentage of the US population that has a low intake (less than 50% of the RDA) for each of these eight micronutrients ranges from 2 to 20%. A level of folate deficiency causing chromosome breaks was present in approximately 10% of the US population, and in a much higher percentage of the poor. Folate deficiency causes extensive incorporation of uracil into human DNA (4 million/cell), leading to chromosomal breaks. This mechanism is the likely cause of the increased colon cancer risk associated with low folate intake. Some evidence, and mechanistic considerations, suggest that vitamin B12 (14% US elderly) and B6 (10% of US) deficiencies also cause high uracil and chromosome breaks. Micronutrient deficiency may explain, in good part, why the quarter of the population that eats the fewest fruits and vegetables (five portions a day is advised) has about double the cancer rate for most types of cancer when compared to the quarter with the highest intake. For example, 80% of American children and adolescents and 68% of adults do not eat five portions a day. Common micronutrient deficiencies are likely to damage DNA by the same mechanism as radiation and many chemicals, appear to be orders of magnitude more important, and should be compared for perspective. Remedying micronutrient deficiencies should lead to a major improvement in health and an increase in longevity at low cost.
